Weight Line Offset
Given the concern that the weight, as it drops, creates a disturbance as it is in the proximity of the swinging pendulum bob, some makers, Hoser amongst them, believed that shifting the weight to the side would improve the accuracy of the clock. Hoser had a particularly effective method of shifting the weight, consisting of a first idler pulley (seen at the top of this photo) which routed the weight line to an upper pulley, that was grooved to match the weight drum. As the line moved forward in the mechanism as it unwound, the first idler rotates and moves forward, sending the line up to the upper, grooved idler. It is surprising how little offset there is to the first idler compared to the winding drum or the second idler. A super neat idea.
