VR-605 - Stunning Transitional 3 weight
A very very nice three-weight Transitional piece, great dial caligraphy showing the makers name - Georg Ledl (also spelled Ledel). Claterbos shows him in Neubau (a Vienna district) at Richtergasse 9 in the early 1870's.
While doing this pieces restoration I was struck time and again at how this clock screamed quality with every detail I uncovered. And how it screamed about being held together by airplane glue, wood glue, bathroom caulk... It is not uncommon for me to find that pieces have been glued back on when the original hide glue let go. But, this clock took the cake for the variety of replacement glues used in keeping it together. Hence the number of clamped shots at the end of the gallery, showing the lengths I go to in my efforts to get all the pieces put back exactly where they were originally.
To put it mildly, this clock is stunning. I have also included a before shot to give an idea of how tough it is to judge one of these pieces from the before shots. This one was filthy – cleaning brought out grain I never dreamt was there. But, I find that on pretty much all of the clocks I clean up.
Beautiful pulleys, a Viennese mechanism, and stunning case with key-locking door. It's hard to fault a piece like this!
