VR-227 - Miniature serpentine Austrian timepiece
This clock is so very small, measuring just 35 inches from the top of its top finial to the bottom of its bottom finial, but oh so very complete. Remember when comparing the length of clocks that most don’t have their top or bottom pieces, so their measurements make them seem smaller than they actually are. For instance, if this case is measured without top or bottom finial it is only 27 inches long.
With its 5 inch dial, 4.5 inch diameter bob, and 3 inch long weight, every thing about this little gem is “just right”. And the finish has been polished out to perfection. Sometimes I receive a clock like this one that has obviously had its finish refreshed in Europe - my assumption is that they re-French polish the case. In the case of this clock it is obvious it was never stripped, but yet the finish is just so perfect. And it’s color is the dark maroon that almost looks black in the right light. It is not often that one finds one of these little beauties in this nice of condition.
This clocks mechanism is the classic, extremely simple and very high quality piece one expects to find in a Viennese clock. And it runs a week on a weight that just weighs just 2 pounds.
This clock has a very nice zinc-backed pendulum bob and adjustment nut, correct weight, original wooden seatboard, a lovely little pulley that is just the right size (witness the weight lines hanging perfectly parrallel to eachother), original pendulum rod, nice dial with a number of very fine hair-line cracks and just the least trace of the makers name and correct and delicate hands.
