VR-613 3 Weight Floor-Standing Regulator
This floor-standing Vienna Regulator from the last quarter of the 1800's is an excellent example of why I love to work on Viennese clocks. The quality in every component shines through - stunning carving, perfect turnings, case joints that have withstood the ravages of time because they were done correctly the first time. And, given the Europeans tendency to not move as often as folk do here in the US, so many of the clocks like this one that I have brought in from Germany and Austria don’t have nicks and gouges to contend with. But, even with the quality I have seen, the dial on this clock still surprised me. While not perfect, the silvering is original, as is about everything about this clock. Yes, I reblue all the screws in the mechanism, and the gongs, and the hands, but it is so wonderful to find original glass, with all its original imperfections, original hinges, locks – as I said above – I love working on clocks like this!
And, when it comes to engraving - the workmanship is truly amazing.
And, even better, the base of the case has a small plate indicating that it was made by Ignatz Herlinger, a master carpenter, who had a shop at 49 Hundsthurmerstrasse in Vienna’s 5th district.
Interestingly too, the clock runs for 10 days on a wind – a bit longer than usual.
