VR-248 - Biedermeier Austrian week-duration granne-sonnerie Vienna Regulator
The contrast between the rosewood veneer and the dark trim pieces make this clock one of the more striking pieces offered in this auction. Not to mention one of the better made, reflected by the perfect joining of the veneer between the beveled section around the door glass and the flat outer section of the door. The case is in very nice condition, even when compared to some of the beautiful pieces offered in this auction. It is a case that I just want to touch - to feel how perfectly it all comes together.
And it has an Austrian three-weight movement that has been recently cleaned. Again, the details say it all - for instance, note the lovely crutch which was made in the shape of a heart. The maker was a man who set his own standards even when most people would never know the subtle beauty he built into his mechanism. Note too the exquisite two-piece porcelain dial (one faint hair-line between the 7 and 8) with machined winding hole grommets, the delicate hands, ornate pie-crust bezel, matching five-spoke pulleys, unusual beat scale in excellent condition, flawless brass-backed pendulum bob, original wall stabilizers, old winding key and even a key lock for the door, with key - this really is a very beautiful example of the late Biedermeier period.
Your attention is called to the beautifully executed base, with its complex curves, the key-locking case door (which closes very nicely thank you) and the matching, and appropriate weights. The door glass is old while the two side pieces look to be later additions.
A beautiful example of the late Biedermeier with one of the most striking combinations of veneer and faux-finished trim that one will see.
