VR-322 - 60 day Altdeutsche Vienna Regulator with Indicating Pendulum
This auction has a number of truly beautiful, and impressive large wall clocks, making it hard to decide which is the nicest. This clock, with its indicating pendulum, full, free-standing columns to the door, stunning carving, two-month duration, exquisite patina, and perfect, original finish is a close contender. And then there are the initials: The headpiece is marked with the initials “L” with an “S” coiled around it, while the crutch is marked with an “H”. While it is indeed unfortunate that the owners of these initials are lost in the mists of time, I suspect the initials so beautifully carved into the headpiece were those of the person who commissioned the piece. And, the maker chose to conceal his initial in the crutch, probably realizing that the names on the dials washed off all too easily.
None the less, you are looking at a clock that is as close to perfect as you will probably find, especially in one of this grand of a scale. The dial is perfect, as are the hands, mechanism (with maintaining power and seconds-beat pendlum), old wavy glass, key-lock door with old key, massive wall stabilizers with locking nuts: In fact, the only flaw I can find worth mentioning is the lack of an original key.
And the clock runs, the needle moves in the face of the bob when the pendulum rating nut is adjusted: The clock is ready to hang and enjoy. A clock like this, in such original condition, is one that I would recommend against cleaning and waxing. The patina is just too perfect - I would be loathe to disturb it just to shine up the case.
It is amazing to see the beautiful carving, the lovely finials, and the original finish, all intact, with minimal signs of any damage. This clock truly is a one of a kind piece, in very rare condition.
