VR-298 - Month-duration Altdeutsche Austrian Granne-Sonnerie striking Vienna Regulator by August Lorenzy in Wien
Over the top is probably the best description for this clock. Black dials to both the mechanism and the pendulum, black beat scale, position-indicating pendulum, month duration Granne-Sonnerie, and one of the most amazing cases I suspect I will ever see. Even more amazing is the cases condition - it is nearly perfect!
Inlaid burl veneer to the door columns and case back, carved fruit everywhere, finish that begs to be touched to be able to believe its condition - a truly amazing and unusual clock. The Altdeutsche period produced cases that followed the logical progression from the stark simplicity of the Biedermeier through the restrained adornments of the transitional, to the exuberant glory of the Altdeutsche. And this clock, with its wonderful carving, is about as exuberant as it can get.
And, for those of you who don’t want something quite as unusual as the top fruit-basket - the clock looks very nice, and much more conventional with it removed. If desired I will provide an appropriate finial to stand in for the fruit basket for 50 dollars.
While we each have our personal tastes in styles, I find the narrower Altdeutsche clocks much more attractive than the wider, grander clocks. I also find the narrower chapter rings to be a nicer, more elegant touch.
Note the delicate and matching pulleys, correct weights, in good condition, the brass-backed pendulum bob with hand/dial on the front that indicates how much you move the rating nut when adjusting the clocks rate, the original and perfect beat scale, original wall stabilizers, locking door with key, old winding key...
The unmarked Austrian movement needs cleaned, though it ran for 50 minutes while I was shooting pictures, and it strikes. The dial, with its narrow chapter ring, has one fine hairline crack, and two small chips, which have been painted in. I took the time to clean the dial on the pendulum and the beat scale, they both cleaned up beautifully. The mechanism dial also needs cleaned, which will make it the same, jet black as the pendulum dial and the beat scale. The hands are in great shape, and appear to be original to the clock, and the door and one side glass are old.
If you want an unusual, very collectible, very rare long-duration granne-sonnerie striking Vienna Regulator, this clock deserves your consideration
