VR-239 - Altdeutsche Austrian R/A Timepiece
The R/A is a genre of clocks that draws its name from the “R” and “A” on their pendulums. The original concept for the “R” and “A” is nicely shown on clock 298 in this auction. To me it is a bit amazing that so many R/A’s were made while so very few of the original clocks - those with a hand that moved to reflect adjustments to the pendulum. On the one hand you have an extremely rare feature, while the “R/A” are probably the most prolific of the German wall clocks.
This spring-driven, week-running piece, while an R/A, is an unusual and desirable piece. The first thing to note is the Austrian mechanism. As is typical for Austrian clocks, the mechanism is very well made. Note the lovely details, the machined crutch bridge (with the scalloped cut-out to the bottom), the solid brass plates, mounting screws with a double-knurled rim, and, if you could wind this clock, you would find it winds like a French clock, easy to wind, not stiff like a Becker. And, the mechanism is clean and running. Next note the details of the pendulum: The trim to the pendulum rod is not pressed brass (as would be typical in an R/A), it is surprisingly heavy, some parts engraved, screws machined, nicely inset, knobs beautifully made - really a lovely, and oh-so small pendulum. The dial, in perfect condition, and the delicate, beautifully made hands complete the mechanical aspects of this cute little piece. Even the winding key is original and special, with its machined grooves and knurled trim.
The case is in very good condition under the patina that one often finds on the pieces that have lived their lives without the benefit(?) of a visit to an antique store. An unspoiled, unsullied piece that will come to life when cleaned, or, if you prefer, looks perfect as it is. With its locking door (the look works, has its key), pair of carved faces to the base of the door columns (nicely done, as is all of the carving on this case), original finials, all old and wavy glass, this clock is a very original piece.
This is another of those clocks that make it hard to get a proper perspective on its size. With its 31 inch overall length, and a width of 12 inches (at the top) it is probably smaller than you realize from the photos. And cuter.
If you are would like to have a cute, very unusual, and oh-so nice example of the R/A’s, or if you just want an unusual, quality clock, this one deserves a second look.
