VR-619 2 Weight Altdeutsche Vienna Regulator
This 42 inch long clock has a classic Viennese mechanism – which is to say it has a fantastic mechanism. With its wooden seat board, and zinc-backed bob, this piece is a beautiful example of the exquisite work done by the Viennese in the last half of the 1800’s. At a time when the Germans were stamping out mechanisms on assembly lines, the Austrians were still hand-making these fantastic mechanisms. And this one is a perfect case in point. I shot pictures of the strike train fan – no bent piece of brass here –the fan was milled out of a piece of brass. Note the crutch – exquisitely made, and even the way the dial is held together, with such small screws and perfect brackets – as opposed to just bending pieces of brass as was often done on Beckers and the other German factory clocks. Even the arm for the pull repeat is a work of art!
Counting the hour and striking the half, this mechanism was a joy to go through – and it now runs perfectly. This clock is in very nice, unrestored condition. It needed surprisingly little - mostly replacement finials for the top. And a good waxing. The case will truly come to life when waxed with a quality wax. To show the impact of my going through a clock like this, I have included a couple of before photo's with the shots of the finished piece.
Being Viennese the carving is exceptional, as you can readily see in the photos.
