VR-610 3 weight Altdeutsche Highly Carved Becker with engraved bits
As you look at the pictures, think about how much effort went into the phenomenal carving you see on this clock. I have never before seen door columns that are carved! And, except for the bottom finial (which will be replaced with one more appropriate before this clock ships), all of the carving is very well done. I was surprised to see how perfect every detail was, just look at the carving just below the headpiece – the tassels are a half inch thick – really great carving!
This piece is 54 inches long, so a bit longer than the typical three weight. But, with its "headpiece on a headpiece" or "Stacked headpiece" design, and elaborate base treatment it is easy to see how it is a bit longer than normal. Note too, there are two carved bits missing from the sides of the headpiece. Both pieces are here and will reattach readily, such that it will not be apparent that they had come loose.
I am quite partial to the carved door columns, and the nicely carved inset piece in the backboard, as well as the exquisitely etched dial center, weights and pendulum bob. This piece has all its original pulleys, wall stabilizers and the like, and strikes on straight gongs, giving it a deep and resonant voice.
The mechanism is serial numbered 386099 and has the distinctive Gustav Becker trade marks for the Braunau factory. The serial number dates this clock to 1905.
Look at the pictures, and just think how great this piece will look after it has been cleaned up and waxed. The case color will deepen, it will be a truly stunning clock when finished.
