VR-534 3 weight Altdeutsche with embossed components and a wonderful carved face to headpiece
When I pulled this clock off of the shelf I was immediately struck by how wonderfully it is carved. While likely too ornate for some, this piece, with its applied brass trim and extensive carving will be perfect for someone who really loves attention to detail. The richness extend to the embossed weights, pulleys, pendulum bob and dial. It is hard to find anything about this clock that is plain.
I am partial to the port-hole cases – the ones, like this one with the round window for the dial and square window for the lower section. I think it adds visual appeal – not to mention making the dial stand out just that much more. Note that this clock strikes on long straight gong rods, giving it a deep, resonant tone. The mechanism is a quality German piece from the Schlenker-Kienzle factory, with their distinctive winged trademark. The very low serial number on this clocks mechanism (2275) and the distinctive trademark date this clock to around 1908. This clock came to me as a part of a collection of very fancy Altdeutsche Vienna Regulators – all of which had either embossed components, or had cast figures on the dials, bobs and weights. This is a very complete, and very attractive piece, which cleaned up beautifully!
