VR-392 3 Weight Transitional Vienna Regulator in light Walnut
This 3 weight Vienna Regulator by Carl Meyer, in B. Leipa. Bohmische Leipa, Bohemia is now known as Čiskẚ Lipa. The town is roughly 40 miles north of Prague in the Czech Republic - More on Čiskẚ Lipa
Ceska Lipa – another spelling, is roughly 240 miles north north-west of Vienna – so, we are looking at a provincial piece, but clearly with a lot of Viennese influence. In reviewing the standard references I find a Carl in Berlin in 1874. Of course, Berlin is 200 miles further to the North North-West. So, can’t say I find this maker listed. But, clearly a talented maker, and, with the wonderfully engraved corbels I would date this piece to the latter quarter of the 1800’s.
The mechanism is everything you would expect to see in a Viennese piece, though I expect to find some wonderful provincial touches when I get to restore it. The walnut-veneered case is very nicely made, with very nicely turned adornments to the columns and solid walnut trim. It is missing its bottom three finials (which will be replaced with appropriate pieces when I go through the case) but is other wise wonderfully complete. Without the bottom finial this piece measures 45 inches long, so it will be perhaps 48 inches when completed.
This clock, when restored, will be delivered to your door in the lower 48 for $3,800.
