VR-634 Floor-Standing 3 weight Regulator of 2 week duration by Johann Salfer
Speaking of Salfer (amazing how this maker keeps popping up) VR-634 is an absolutely stunning example. OK, it needs waxed in a major way to bring out the depth of its finish. With its long gongs it is going to have a wonderfully deep, and resonant chime, but, quite in the style of a Vienna. I have already made and finished the two top finials, and they look great, a really good match to the style, color and patina of the clock. I also have to say that floor standing clocks are an amazing value, they just don’t begin to demand the prices one would expect given the quality and the size of the cabinetry. And, yes, this is a wonderfully large clock – it will bring a very elegant presence to a room – I just went down and looked at it – the carving is everything you would expect on a Salfer – very precisely and perfectly executed. If you have not yet found it, check out the article I wrote for the BHI Horological Institutes journal discussing the similarities and differences between a top end German factory piece (heck, one of the very finest of that genre) and a Salfer. As clocks go, this is a pretty large piece – 96 inches tall, and 32 inches at the widest point of the base. It is also 15 inches deep at its deepest point on the base.
This clock, when cleaned up, and delivered in the lower 48, will cost only $12,000 – a truly stunning clock for a person who will have the joy of hearing it chime the quarters and the hour for the rest of their lives.
