VR-329 From Prague - Unusual, wonderfully rare
This small piece (38 inches long) is wonderfully complete except for the ends of the hour hand and the minute had – ok, the hands are a problem but one I can resolve, though it will mean providing an appropriate pair of replacements. And the headpiece has been painted a rather shiny black, which will need to be restored to an appropriate dark brown with rub throughs and patina. For me this is the size of clock I like the most - not a miniature - the size just bigger than a mini - somehow they always strike a chord with me. And this piece especially so with the stunning figuring to the wood, the to-die for unusual base treatment - and so very complete. I took pictures of the back of the bob to show the construction - not just rolled edges on the brass to hold the zinc back in place - screwed to each side - like the older pieces in Vienna. As is common with provincials where the maker did not have access to the latest bits and bobs in Vienna - this maker had to make his own - likely as his master was trained to do 30 years earlier. I also shot the pendulum top hanger and crutch slot - attention to detail marks this piece. I really look forward to doing the mechanism! And the banding around the window, the dial calligraphy, I am quite taken with this piece!
