VR-201 3 Weight with Unusul Door
VR-201 – Let’s think 1840 or a bit earlier here, very narrow chapter ring (early feature), gorgeous pie-crust bezel (suggests post 1835), 3 weight, great hands, fantastic signature, lots and lots of positives. Negative, missing head and tailpieces – depending on taste, may not want a headpiece – but tail I think is needed, and would not be hard to make a perfect replacement. Things I like most – the way the door is made – beveled to both the inside and outside of door – rarely seen and a very nice, if difficult to execute touch. And the crutch – talk about unusual – some how I suspect the design of the crutch has significance, but I admit to not knowing what that significance is. And the very nicely executed trim to the top and bottom of the door.
Claterbos lists this clocks maker, Karl Kohaut, as being a Landmeister (land-master - my impression is this is a country Bürger, or perhaps a member of the upper class) in Braunhirschengrund (a suburb of Vienna - but think more an area with wealthy estates). He was listed in the Vienna guild in 1844 and 1858, suggesting this piece was made early in his career.
Restored, with a replacement tailpiece appropriate in color, style and finish, delivered in the lower 48, $6,500.
Add an appropriate headpiece - $500
