VR-395 Ornate Austrian Vienna Regulator
Exuberance. This clock exemplifies the concept of Exuberance! With its extensive applied brass trim, its intricate and complex pendulum, wonderful carving, over the top headpiece, and phenomenal engraving to the dial center, this piece is an example of the Altdeutsche period at its grandest!
Measuring 51 inches long, the case is in very good condition (ok, dirty and grimy, but that will be rectified when the case is cleaned up and waxed), and very complete, lacking only a tip to the top finial, and a finial to one side of the base. These will be replaced with appropriate pieces that will match the original such that they will not be discernable.
I think the real quality of this piece is best shown by the engraving in the dial center – it really is very fine. The mechanism is Viennese, with all the attributes of the quality for which the Viennese are noted. The hands are not original to the clock, but are very nice, and will be a perfect fit when blued as part of the restoration.
I also noted the unusual carving to the column trim – the fourth picture in the gallery below shows how the carving was extended up into the turned collar on the door column – a rather neat, individualistic touch.
If you like the ornate flair of the Altdeutsche period, this piece may well be the most unusual and striking you will find. When restored, this piece will cost $3,800, delivered in the lower 48.
