Microscopes For Clock Work : The work I do requires that I be able to see very fine details - pivots as they are being stoned and burnished, pallets as they are being dressed, the condition of the inside of pivot holes, honestly, the list goes on and on. Virtually all of the work I do on the jewelers lathe or my small Swiss mill is done while looking through a binocular microscope. Early in my clock and watch restoration career I was lucky enough to find one of the scopes shown below. These scopes were developed for ophthalmic surgery. I find them to be the most effective option available for doing clock and watch work. Their big advantage is their very well made and stable articulated arms. I have one on every bench in my shop, ready to be pulled down and use. These scopes can be purchased with 6X, 10X, 15X, or 20X optics. I recommend the 10X for most work. One of the following pictures show how the mount is clamped to the bench. These scopes also came with a floor-mounted base – with castors. Sometimes I have one of the floor bases in stock. They are heavy, so pricey to ship. I did, before I wrote Tid-Bit 14, but they are all gone. OK, I have 8 of them, but they all have a purpose. I recommend you search medical equipment surplus shops for used Colposcopes. They are not nearly as flexible as these, but there are lots of them out there and they will work.

Wall Stabilizers : Once upon a time there was a small shop in the UK by the name of Clock Spares. They made small batches of custom parts for clocks for suppliers in the UK and around the world. I commissioned them to make replacement wall stabilizers for Vienna Regulators. The good news is that they did very, very nice work. And the wall stabilizers look perfect on even the earlier and nicer Vienna Regulators. The bad news is they were pricey. But, none the less, I did end up with a goodly number of very nice replacement wall stabilizers. Since that time I have managed to amass a significant number of original wall stabilizers that I can use to match or replace missing originals on the clocks I sell. So, I have decided to sell the replacement pieces I had made. Hence this gallery. One day, when I have sold all of my inventory (think 20 years) I will sell originals, but for now, I don't need the new ones any more - so check out this page. Stabilizers brackets and the stabilizer screws are sold only by the pair, but you can mix and match between the two styles of stabilizer screws and brackets. Vienna Regulator Weight Hooks : Replacement Vienna Regulator Weight Hooks One of the frustrations of restoring Vienna Regulators and German Vienna-style Regulators is trying to find replacement hooks for the weights. For years I have been using hooks that had to be filed down to match the originals that came on weights – the first picture in this gallery shows what I had been using – these are readily available on the web. The problem is the center hole in the hook is not centered, and the threads have been stamped on. Which meant I had to spend time filing the hook to get the hole centered and the overall shape right, and then had to thread the screw portion since the “threads” that were there didn’t work. I finally decided to get hooks that were a little bit easier to work with. Hence this page -The hook in the middle of the first picture is the result. I made it to match the most common weight-hook I come across in my work. I had it made with a 3 mm screw – which is slightly larger than most of the originals you will find on Viennese weights. I found, when replacing hooks recently in three weights, that the original holes were the right size for threading with a 3 mm tap. The second picture gives dimensions on these hooks and their thread - 3 x 0.5 mm. Hooks are offered for $7.50 for the first hook (including cost of mailing in the US), and $6 for each subsequent hook.

Binocular Loupes : Over the years I have found a few pair of the vintage Binocular loupes that I feel are so appropriate for clock work. While I only have a few pair, I don't need to keep them all.
