The rest of the clocks have prices which include all the prep work they will need, or have already received, to hang on your wall. This includes cleaning the case (if appropriate), waxing the case, replacing any missing pieces of trim, tightening any loose case joints, going through the mechanisms, and shipping to the lower 48. VR-238 - A wonderfully short dwarf : A very short dwarf at only 30 inches long. This wonderfully short, fat little Vienna Regulator has a zinc-backed bob and an exquisite small mechanism, telling me that it dates to perhaps 1860. Clearly Viennese by its quality and attention to details, this little clock will clean up wonderfully. The case in in very nice condition, with a few minor veneer challenges that would want fixed, it also wants two finials to the corner of the top, and a new bottom finial (the bottom one is only half there). If you have a really good eye you will notice there is some trim missing to the top left part of the top of the clock. This trim is here, just needs glued on, and is not hurt or damaged. When looking the case over I noted the unusual door with glazing strips all the way around the back of the glass, and edges of the door set at 45 degrees to the body of the door, the very nicely done carving to the sides of the door, the exquisite Viennese mechanism, its dial with a couple of very fine hairline cracks that will disappear when cleaned, but otherwise absolutely perfect, and the very fine hands: When cleaned up this will be a little gem. The total price, including shipping to any of the lower 48, cleaning up the case and mechanism, three new finials to match the originals, door and winding key, would be $2,200. Given the very short drop for this mechanism, I suspect I would really, really enjoy working on it – it has to be extremely well made. While only running a week, with its short drop, the mechanism has to be made to the standard of a month running mechanism with a longer drop.

VR-326 Month Duration Vienna Regulator by Resch with Day of Month : What an unusual and rare clock. This is the only month duration clock I have seen from Gebrueder Resch. And, to make it even more special, it has a patented porcelain strip that runs down the case with numbers for the day of the month. As the weight drops the indicator hand to the top of the weight points out the date! In 1861 Lorenz Resch opened the first clock factory in Austria to produce Vienna Regulators. The factory was located in Vienna until 1871 when he built a factory in the picturesque town of Ebensee. Lorenz died before the factory opened, and his three sons went on to become the envy of the Austrian clock industry. With the death of Lorenz the sons changed the name of the company to Gebrueder Resch (Gebr. Resch, or GR, meaning “Brothers Resch”). The classic trademark “Remember” is credited with being developed by the factory workers who wanted to have a way of marking the love they felt for the factory owner on his death. The clocks made by the Resch factory are comparable to the very best of the Beckers, and on par with Lenzkirch clocks. “Remember” clocks were sold through a Vienna outlet and widely exported. In fact, Kroeber imported many into the US. As with this clock, Resch mechanisms are attached to the brass mounting plate by keyhole slots slipping over turned studs. The Resch factory made only weight-driven mechanisms. The factory production reached its peak in 1885, producing from 12,000 to 15,000 clocks per year. The mechanism, serial numbered 180374, is in good condition, though it could use a good cleaning. The dial is perfect, with no hairline cracks or flaws. And, the two holes in the dial (for the hand arbors and the winding hole) have grommets - a nice and very functional touch. The porcelain date strip is also in excellent condition. There are a few hair-line cracks, which will disappear when cleaned, and no chips. As one would expect, the bob is zinc-backed, the pulley oversized (as one expects on a month runner) and all the little bits are original. The mechanism mounting bracket and pendulum hanger are serial numbered to match the mechanism. The 51 inch case is in good to excellent condition, as well as being grimy and dirty. It will be a pleasure to bring it back to life with a good cleaning and waxing. This piece is priced at $4,500, which includes restoration and delivery in the lower 48.

VR-367 A marriage clock : While this will become an “oh my god” clock, right now it is simply an amazing pile of bits and pieces. The case is very solid, veneered in oak, and well patina’d (which translates to filthy). Note the massive columns to the sides of the door! But, it appears that whatever glue was used to hold the various bits of trim to the case was not quite up to snuff. Most of the trim pieces have fallen off – actually, as I was pulling it off the shelf to shoot these pictures, more bits fell off. But, it will make the case a lot easier to clean, and it is very easy to put pieces back on – with glue that will not let go. When reassembled, this piece will measure roughly 60 inches long. On the plus side, the mechanism is in phenomenal condition, and the nickel-plated bits are very nice. The dial is pretty much to die for – with its black chapter ring and 1/16 inch thick applied brass numbers and highly engraved dial center. This clock was clearly made for a couple as a wedding gift, or to celebrate an important anniversary. My buyer in Austria indicated it was most likely for a marriage. Engraved on the dial is “gewidmet der hochgeehrten”, Braut, Marie, and Werndl. The phrase translates to “devoted to the highly esteemed”. The engraving to the dial center, the pulleys and the pendulum is fantastic. Interestingly, the pendulum is very heavy – the side bars appear to be solid, and the whole thing is very well made. With a zinc backed pendulum bob, and the exceptional mechanism mounted on four posts, I would place this piece in the earlier part of the Altdeutsche period, and clearly made in the Viennese style, if not made in Vienna. Oh, and just look at the pulleys - amazing! This is the kind of clock that will either sell to someone with a phenomenal ability to visualize how magnificent this piece will be when finished, or it will await my restoration before selling. Either way it will be a stunning and very large piece when finished. When ready to hang it will fetch $6,500, including shipping in the lower 48.

VR-395 Ornate Austrian Vienna Regulator : Exuberance. This clock exemplifies the concept of Exuberance! With its extensive applied brass trim, its intricate and complex pendulum, wonderful carving, over the top headpiece, and phenomenal engraving to the dial center, this piece is an example of the Altdeutsche period at its grandest! Measuring 51 inches long, the case is in very good condition (ok, dirty and grimy, but that will be rectified when the case is cleaned up and waxed), and very complete, lacking only a tip to the top finial, and a finial to one side of the base. These will be replaced with appropriate pieces that will match the original such that they will not be discernable. I think the real quality of this piece is best shown by the engraving in the dial center – it really is very fine. The mechanism is Viennese, with all the attributes of the quality for which the Viennese are noted. The hands are not original to the clock, but are very nice, and will be a perfect fit when blued as part of the restoration. I also noted the unusual carving to the column trim – the fourth picture in the gallery below shows how the carving was extended up into the turned collar on the door column – a rather neat, individualistic touch. If you like the ornate flair of the Altdeutsche period, this piece may well be the most unusual and striking you will find. When restored, this piece will cost $3,800, delivered in the lower 48.

VR-399 Viennese Altdeutsche Regulator with a Becker Mechanism : A very handsome example of the Altdeutsche period, this piece, with the names Stadlmann, and Ischl on the dial, is 51 inches tall, and is in fantastic, if dusty and a bit grimy condition. It will clean up and really be a beautiful clock. In as much as I do not find a Stadlmann listed in any of the classic books on clockmakers, I assume he was a retailer as opposed to a clockmaker. The mechanism is from the Gustav Becker Braunau factory, with serial number 254882, indicating it was made in early 1900. This is consistent with the use of straight steel gongs (which give this clock a wonderful, deep strike tone). Note also that all 3 weight clocks made by Becker came from the Braunau factory. And, consistent with a clock made in 1900, the case is very nicely made, with good carving and an elegant, as opposed to a fussy feel. It is likely that Stadlmann imported Becker clock for his shop, and had his name added to the dial. I suspect that Stadlmann had a very exclusive shop, as would be appropriate for a health resort in the Austrian Alps. Ischl, or more commonly Bad Ischl (Bad translates to “Bath”) is in upper Austria, on Traun river. It is a health resort 51 miles SW or Linz, where there are mineral spring baths. A striking Gustav Becker clock, beautiful case, deep strike tone, perfect dial, all the small bits correct, this clock costs $3,600, when cleaned, and including delivery in the lower 48.

VR-508 Time and Strike German Wall Clock : While I don't carry many spring driven clocks, this one is attractive enough, and very nicely made – making it one worth making an exception. There is a perfect little metal tag just below the door, indicating that this clock was sold by Friedrich Moser in Gmunden – a small town on Lake Traun in upper Austria. This little gem is only 36 inches long! The applied brass trim is in very good shape, as is the case, with the exception of a missing top finial and the cracks in the door. Both of these challenges will be gone when you receive this clock. Dial is perfect, original wall stabilizers - a very complete and nice piece. Price $1,200, delivered in lower 48 states.

VR-580 Small 2 weight Vienna Regulator : A small German made Vienna Regulator. The case is exceptional, though rather dirty. At 34.5 inches long, with its original bottom finials, wonderful original glass (complete with ripples and small bubbles), zinc-backed bob (so, an early example of the Altdeutsche period – judging by the quality of the carving and mechanism, around 1870), original beat scale, wall stabilizers, and winding key – this will be a rather nice piece when cleaned up. When cleaned, the case will lighten up quite a bit, bringing out more of the beauty of the underlying wood. But, with its small, very nicely made German mechanism (of higher quality than a Becker), and very nice size, it will be a great example of the Altdeutsche period. This piece will cost $1,600 when cleaned up, including delivery in the lower 48.

VR-581 2 Weight Porthole Vienna Regulator : This Austrian Vienna Regulator was made by Gebrueder Resch (Brothers Resch). The casework and mechanisms from the Resch factory (the only factory in Austria) are exceptionally nice, on a par with the pieces made by Lenzkirch, and significantly better than those made by Gustav Becker. This piece, measuring 47 inches long, is in exceptionally complete condition – all of the applied brass is in place, and all in good condition. I find the port-hole style cases rather more striking than the typical Altdeutsche pieces, I suppose because of the extra detail to the doors. And, while this clock is missing two finials (to either side of the top), I prefer it as is, and would not replace them, if I was the purchaser. But, that is your choice – adding the two finials will add $80 to the price of the clock. Note too the very nice engraving to the components – this is a very striking, very attractive piece. Total cost, delivered in lower 48, with case and mechanism cleaned up, but without the two top finials, is $2,200

The exceptionally narrow and elegant case is 52 inches long, and in perfect, if grimy condition. I love the contrasting colors of the veneer and the carved adornments on this case. And the quality and extent of the carving is fantastic. I especially like the headpiece – elegant carving and then the perfect series of turned spindles below it. This piece has all its original bits (wall stabilizers, pulleys, beat scale, carved bits), and is in excellent, if grimy condition. It will be a show-piece when finished. If you are looking for a very elegant and quality example of the Altdeutsche period, this piece will exceed your expectations. It will cost $2,600 when cleaned, including shipping to the lower 48.

VR-608 3 Weight Altdeutsche Vienna Regulator : This porthole-style Altdeutsche Vienna Regulator measures 51 inches and is in excellent condition (dirt and grime will clean up very nicely) and has all of its original little bits and bobs (beat scale, wall stabilizers, finials, etc). One of the things I like the most about buying clocks in Europe is you can often find clocks that have been put back when they went out of style perhaps 100 years ago, so it is not uncommon to find a clock like this one that is very correct and complete. Details – strikes on long gongs for a deep, melodious stike, one if the nicest German mechanisms I have seen – I am amazed at how small the strike fans are – and they are not simply flat pieces of brass that have been bent to accept an arbor, they are machined from a block of brass, just like the Viennese-made ones. Except they are smaller. Overall a very, very nice mechanism. The dial chapter ring (the porcelain outer part) is in perfect condition, and all the shiny parts (pendulum bob, weights, and dial center) are embossed and all match. This will be a very nice clock when cleaned up. It will cost $3,600 delivered in the lower 48

VR-615 Very Special Lenzkirch Wall Clock : This is a wonderfully complex little clock, only 38 inches long, yet with more finials, more carving, more attention to detail than most larger clocks. Made by Lenzkirch in 1889 (thank you George Everett for your fantastic book Lenzkirch Clocks – the Unsigned Story), this little gem epitomizes the Altdeutsche style – and then goes a bit farther. I especially love the little balcony to the base of the clock, complete with a rail and pillars holding it up. A great place to set the winding key! A novel feature I quite like is the way the sides of the top of the clock fold away to give better access to the mechanism. The sides even have small brass slide latches to hold them in place. Note the pendulum bob – a work of art in its own light, the gorgeous dial, the open well for the pendulum – this really is a piece of eye candy. Fortunately the clock is also virtually complete – the only piece I noticed is missing is one of the cast trim pieces to the corner of the door. Fortunately this is rather easy to reproduce – when you receive this clock you will not be able to tell it was ever missing. I bought this clock, and number 616, from the same collector. One can only imagine how long it took to find two amazing little clocks like these. This piece costs $2,800, including cleaning, polishing, and delivery in the lower 48.

VR-616 German Time and Strike Wall Regulator : This wonderfully small and so very ornate clock measures only37 inches long. And, while the mechanism is unmarked, it, and the case, reflect the quality one would expect to find in a clock made by Lenzkirch. While I could say this is an unmarked Lenzkirch, in as much as the serial number falls into the range that George Everett identified for the unmarked clocks, I suspect it was made by another of the many small German factories producing exceptional mechanisms that were duplicates of the French. But, when I look at the attention to detail, both in the case, and the mechanism, I can only say it really is of the finest German quality – perhaps from Lorenz Bob? I shot a couple of shots of the mechanism to point out the kind of details I appreciate. Two small details - the beveled washers under the screws holding the mechanism to the seat plate, and the scalloped end of the strike train fan - compare with clock 615 – a signed Lenzkirch – I really like this small mechanism, if anything of higher quality than a Lenzkirch! The case is surprisingly complete – there is a piece of trim missing to the side of the top – it will be replaced with a piece that will match extremely well. Likewise there is a bit of the cast brass trim to the front of the base that is missing. I will center the remaining trim and I suspecdt it will look great. Look at the pictures (realizing they were shot when I first saw this clock and are not studio shots), and visualize how great it will look when cleaned up, the case waxed to bring out its color and all the dust and grime polished away. It really is a very rare, and very special piece. Price, delivered in the lower 48, and all cleaned up, is $2,300

VR-620 Time and Strike Altdeutsche Vienna Regulator : This very complete and original time and strike Vienna Regulator is 51 inches tall, has all its original parts, wonderful embossed weights, pendulum bob, dial center, and a very nice, German mechanism. While there is no trademark on the back of the mechanism, is s a very nice, small mechanism, clearly one of the better German factories. People often ask me who made a given clock – for me, the real issue is not which Viennese master, or German factory made a given piece, but how well made is it. This is especially true of the German clocks – even within a given maker – Becker for instance – the quality of the cases and mechanisms varied significantly. This very attractive and complex clock is well done, both from the case and the mechanism standpoints. And very complete, with all its original bits like wall stabilizers, pulleys, hands, wall stabilizers and the like. This clock, when cleaned up, will cost $2,400, delivered in the lower 48.
